New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the historic Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that became a focal point during his campaign.

A Traditional Abode

Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors from the World War II era.

But, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core issue, hesitated to declare this decision immediately after his triumph in November.

"My choice came down to our family's safety and the need to directing my full attention on enacting the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a district famous for its vibrant cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving there, the community will always live inside me and my work," he said.

A Contentious Issue

Throughout his election campaign, Mamdani linked his central policy – to freeze the rent – to his own housing situation.

However his critics, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he came from a prominent family.

Not All Mayors Stayed

Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, chose to live in his private home on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.

Instead, Bloomberg said he believed it should be a place for civic gatherings, and championed an extensive renovation of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his inauguration on 1 January, he will experience surroundings very different than his previous Astoria home.

Featuring cream-colored walls, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Inside, the lower floor of the historically styled mansion is furnished consistent with the home's original era.

The property, which reportedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

A number of people have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "No matter the skeptics say," he stated in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

Mamdani's current apartment is under rent control, meaning the city sets limits on how much building managers can raise the rent each year.

New Yorkers consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the cost of housing rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the real estate platform Zillow, the median rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
