The UK authorities has added an additional eleven new countries to its official advisory roster about the risks of industrial alcohol toxicity from adulterated alcoholic drinks.
This revised advisory now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda due to reports of "an international surge in the number of confirmed occurrences" of toxic alcohol contamination.
Only last month, authorities had earlier placed Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, after multiple high-profile cases such as the deadly loss of half a dozen visitors in Laos in 2024.
Tourists are being warned that as little as small amounts of industrial alcohol can cause blindness or fatality within 12 to 48 hours.
Industrial alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol typically employed in coolant, windshield wiper fluid, and paint solvent. It is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is naturally produced during the manufacture of alcoholic drinks, reputable manufacturers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into alcoholic drinks to save money, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Foreign Office representative the minister said that each tourist should recognize the symptoms of industrial alcohol contamination.
"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for reputable establishments and refrain from unlicensed drinks or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.
"In case something seems unusual, such as a headache that's way worse than usual or vision problems – get medical help right away."
The full roster of destinations noted as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol poisoning presently covers: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
