Top US Lawman Wears LFC Necktie at Senate Session

The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel was seen in front of the Senate judicial panel on Tuesday wearing a necktie displaying the emblem of EPL team Liverpool.

Online Reactions

The choice of neckwear sparked questions on social media. Firstly, it is highly unusual for a public figure to wear a necktie with the logo of a business or sports team. Additionally, Patel has never openly declared fandom for Liverpool previously—that is not verbally.

However, he has been pictured wearing Liverpool ties on no fewer than two separate instances. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s election victory. At the time, he was rumored to be joining the administration. Another instance took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a press event highlighting the arrest of narcotics suspects by US law enforcement.

Multiple Ties

Notably, the tie used on Tuesday was distinct from the earlier item. The earlier design had broad lines and a discrete logo, while the newer tie featured thinner stripes and a larger emblem—identified as the “heritage tie”.

The fact that he owns multiple Liverpool ties implies that his choice is deliberate.

Heated Proceedings

At Tuesday’s session, the mood turned contentious on several occasions. Patel engaged in a loud argument with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He defended his leadership of the FBI, his firing of veteran employees implicated in investigations related to the January 6 events, and a social media post in which he announced that a suspect was in custody for the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk—a statement that turned out to be premature.

“I do not consider it an error,” Patel told the committee. “I view it as cooperating with the people to identify that there was a individual in custody.”

Ideological Divide

If Patel does follow Liverpool, it would represent a sharp contrast of political loyalties. As one of the nation's top law enforcement officials, Patel has been a visible representative of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has used heavy-handed tactics to affect multiple aspects of society.

This includes raids by ICE in public places that have resulted in the detention of many of immigrants regardless of their legal status or citizenship. It also includes the dispatching of government officers to left-leaning US cities in response to supposed higher offense levels—assertions that have been debunked.

The Club’s Identity

Liverpool, by contrast, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning clubs in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once stated: “I am convinced the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a portion of the benefits at the end of the day.”

Though the operations of Liverpool have changed in recent times, traces of collectivist thinking persist. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who led the club to multiple triumphs from 2015 to 2024, described his own politics by remarking: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. If there’s something I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”

Historical Tensions

The club’s fans also have a significant history of distrust toward law enforcement. Much of this stems from the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the crowd of violence and drunkenness. Years later, separate investigations revealed that the stampede was due to gross negligence by authorities, who had misled the people to transfer blame.

Patel’s History

Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he promoted a legal defense fund for those detained in connection with the Capitol attack. A former lawyer and advisor to right-wing figures, Patel used his ties with the previous Trump government to pursue commercial projects and a media career. In both roles, he promoted several conspiracy theories, including discredited assertions of voting irregularities and misleading statements about Covid-19 vaccines.
