Well, how did you experience the past year in your home? Did it seem all as good as one might claim on Facebook? Packed with top marks for the children and riotous dress-up birthday parties for the adults? Or was it a swamp of frustration with only occasional enjoyable moments? Is any of this genuine, or are we all AI-generated AI slop beings with unrealistic dental work?
I've corralled everyone for a reflection, ready or not, to discuss the most important thing in a calendar year: what titles we were obsessed with the most. Let's get started:
Pikmin
"Can’t you pick just one?"
"This isn't my definitive list."
Meanwhile, on mobile, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "trying to find reasonable healthcare."
"In the game?"
"In real life."
Overwatch
"I have no interest in games on my phone." He was offended that the question was posed. Point taken.
Resident Evil Biohazard
She is trying to get into theatre school, but when she stepped away from the mic, she was immersed in Resident Evil. She also spoke at length in great detail about her accomplishments on The Sims, where her avatar has a thriving utopia with infinitely better healthcare than her eldest sister has outside the game.
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She began the year at sixty percent completion and finished the year at 82%. It’s a marathon not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to extract pins.
Minecraft
Whenever I see my 21-year-old son playing Minecraft, I rib him like a cross between a classic comedy bit. When he objects, I reply that I am engaging in this to build character so he can mature and play games for grownups. It's a classic Scottish father/son relationship.
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
It wasn't even close for this one. She is unstoppable. Superior than I was at Dancing Stage MegaMix in my prime.
Marvel Snap
Nothing came close to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted card game wizard’s poker, with its constantly evolving range of cards and game variations.
Marvel Snap
The catch about games that constantly evolve their range is you have a moment of clarity and see it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So enjoyment soured halfway through the year and it was deleted.
Doom: The Dark Ages
Excellent reinvention of a classic franchise. Immersive atmosphere from the off. I wish I could deal with my problems so effectively in real life.
Blue Prince
I decline to rush this beautiful, unique game and I just was short on the time or headspace to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after family time.
Balatro
I'm aware Balatro was last year's breakout game, but I was a late adopter. And it is remarkable. It just gets each element right. Its gameplay loop is a brilliant concept, but the powers behind the different wild cards are so imaginative it has become a game I literally would play at any hour. Combine that with the wittiness of the card design, and this is an absolute peak of gaming. I fantasize about being stuck in a small space for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Outer Worlds 2
I experienced a wave of criticism when I mentioned how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a colossal gaming achievement in terms of production values – which I valued even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So my appreciation goes out to the reader who took the time to write in to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "missing the point". I share that in the exact way, because I respect the passion, and they are obviously an excellent judge of character.
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Sure. Give me a bastard-hard exploration-focused thing and leave me without guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". How delightful. I get that it is beautiful and is ideal if you are into the genre, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I desire less in my current stage of life. I was around back when most games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was okay when I was a kid, but so was many outdated things.
Toss-up between questionable alliances that raised eyebrows, and premium pricing. Both morally indefensible and unpleasant.
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the doorstep at tea time.
Right Thumb Joint. Honestly. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it aches like anything in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs protected back in the 90s.
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to stretch time until the heat death of the universe.
The Witcher 4.
