In a significant move for their rebuilding roster, the South Side team have officially added Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, finalizing a two-year contract with the power-hitting player.

Deal Structure and Added Benefits

The contract grants a seven-figure signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16 million for the next season and $17 million for the 2027 year.

Additionally, Murakami's final-year pay is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:

  • An additional $1M for winning the MVP award.
  • $500K for placing in the top three in MVP voting.
  • $250,000 for ranking fourth through 10th.
  • $250,000 for earning the ROY honor.

The contract also stipulates that he will not be optioned to the farm system without his permission and makes him a free agent at the end of the term. Further benefits include a dedicated interpreter and flight reimbursement between his home country and the States.

Compensation and Historical Context

As part of the signing, Chicago must pay a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Tokyo Yakult Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's Central League. The Japanese club would also receive a supplemental fee of 15% triggered salary escalators.

Murakami is set to become the fourth player from Japan to represent the Chicago franchise, following pitcher Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and fielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Interestingly, Takatsu previously coached Murakami back in Japan.

Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 on February 2nd, joins a promising core of hitters in Chicago that contains prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The team are coming off a last-place season, placing last in the American League Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the prior campaign.
