For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive inside a mental fortress forged from the past of Vecna. Their mission for a way out in episode 6 forces them to experience a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him permanently.
Heads Up: This discussion contains major spoilers for the second part of the final season.
Upon meeting Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a cave that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a viewing device found in Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the source of fear lies not within the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max suddenly fall into a deep mine shaft.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an injured and paranoid man. When Henry tries to help, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly questions through tears. It was a factor, but the act wasn't just a simple act of survival.
Similar to other plot points in volume 2, the truth about the encounter originates in the live show Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the sole survivor was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to hand over to the Soviets, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. This spy in the tunnel was that very thief.
Given what is known about his research, the briefcase almost certainly contained samples of the unique blood type. In the scene, Henry is already bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children under Brenner's care.
Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, coming back after half a day with a new blood type and personality. As a youth, he fights the control of a sinister presence, much like how Will was influenced by the Mind Flayer in the past.
The reason Henry avoids the cave of that cave highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between him and Will, who has deliberately faced his own deepest fears to become stronger.
This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. More importantly, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a critical advantage in the endgame conflict that awaits.
