The Caribbean Nation Grants US Military Use to National Airfields As Growing Strains with Venezuela

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has stated it will permit the United States military to access its airports shortly. This move occurs amid heightening regional tensions between the US and nearby Venezuela.

New Defense System Sparks Debate

The news comes after the setup of a advanced radar system at an airport in Tobago. National the government state the radar's primary purpose is for fighting illegal operations, emphatically denying a base for offensive actions against another country.

Skeptics caution, however, that the partnership risks pulling Trinidad and Tobago into former President Donald Trump's broader pressure campaign against Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Nature of Access and Official Statements

According to a ministry statement, US operations at the airports would be “logistical in nature”, facilitating supply replenishment and routine personnel rotations. The government offered no specifics regarding the scope.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has previously commended US operations targeting alleged drug trafficking vessels in the Caribbean and Pacific, actions that have allegedly led to multiple fatalities, among them a number of Trinidadian citizens.

Earlier Statements and Later Disclosures

At first, Persad-Bissessar said a US C-17 aircraft that landed in Tobago was carrying marines to assist with a local road construction project. Yet, after images surfaced of the radar installation, she admitted that at least 100 marines were stationed in the country, accompanied by the powerful radar.

This system, identified as a long-range AN/TPS-80 G/ATOR, is used for air surveillance, air defense, and counter-fire operations.

The airport access agreement follows a prior event in October, when a US warship was stationed in Trinidad's capital, as part of the Trump administration's ramped-up military pressure towards Venezuela.
