Glasgow Warriors began their Champions Cup journey in ideal fashion with a valuable bonus-point away victory against Sale Sharks.
Taking advantage of the wind at their backs, the hosts started strongly and built a fourteen-point advantage within the first quarter. Tries from the Sale skipper and youngster Ollie Davies gave them early control.
However, the visitors responded well with two tries prior to half-time. Forward Gregor Hiddleston and flanker Rory Darge both went over to narrow the deficit.
Further second-half scores from Kyle Steyn and Stafford McDowall extended the Warriors' lead to 26-14. Marius Louw's reply for the hosts promised a nervous finale, but the visitors held firm to claim a significant opening victory.
Play started with a quick try as skipper Van Rhyn drove over from close range after just two minutes. An early knock to midfielder Ma'asi-White introduced 19-year-old Davies into the fray for his cup debut.
The youngster made an instant impact. Switching to fly-half, he ran a smart support line to take an offload and touch down, extending Sale's lead.
Against challenging weather, Glasgow used their forward power to get back into the game. A powerful driving maul was touched down by hooker Hiddleston. Just before the half, Rory Darge forced his way over, with Hastings' conversion making it a narrow game at half-time.
The Scottish club took the advantage for the first time early in the restart. A misjudged kick was collected by No. 8 Dempsey, who fed captain Kyle Steyn to burst through a challenge and sprint to the try-line.
With in the ascendancy, Glasgow secured the fourth try when McDowall ran through a tackle to score his century for the team. That score completed a run of 26 unanswered points.
Sale gave themselves a lifeline when Louw used good footwork to cross. The kick made it a one-score game with minutes left.
One last opportunity came for them from a line-out in the corner, but they failed to secure the ball, sealing Glasgow's victory.
Sale Sharks must regroup ahead of a trip to face Clermont this weekend. In contrast, Glasgow will host six-time winners Toulouse to Scotstoun.
Both sides are drawn in a strong Pool One that also includes the English side and South African outfit the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
