Residents have been urged to stay indoors, stay off roads, and prepare for more power and communication outages.

The electricity loss seems to be impacting households mostly in the southern region, though officials report that the electricity supply was being gradually reinstated.

Regional news have stated that in various locations roofs have been ripped off houses, whereas utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a man was fatally injured after being hit by a falling limb at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a female was blown onto approaching vehicles on a road by a strong gust of wind, in a incident that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services in and out of the city have been cancelled as a result of the gusts, whereas some roads and libraries are shut down.
