Far-Right Former Congressman José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Incoming Head of State.

In a decisive runoff election, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.

A Resounding Victory

After more than 99% of votes tallied, Kast secured 58.17% of the ballots, beating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who earned 41.83%.

This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.

Campaign Built On Law and Order and Immigration

Noted for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the period of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily built on promises to address rising insecurity and drastically reduce migration.

He repeatedly cited foreigners, notably the roughly 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. Throughout the campaign, he delivered an final demand for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face removal.

His proposals featured Trump-inspired measures such as building holding facilities, high walls, perimeter fencing, and bolstering the army presence on the northern border.

Part of a Continental Trend

Several commentators view Kast's victory as part of a wider rightward wave in South America, coming after recent electoral outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.

Nevertheless, other experts also view it as a part of the established rotation of power between left and right governments since Chile's establishment of democracy in 1990.

Leading Lacking a Clear Majority

Despite his clear popular vote win, Kast does not have an absolute majority in Congress, neither in the lower house or the Senate, even when all right-leaning parties are combined together.

This legislative landscape may hinder his policy goals, such as a vow to slash public spending by a significant sum within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.

"We have many questions about how a Kast government will look like that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will do them," commented a political science professor.

The expert added, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see spending cuts associated with the right. But the area with considerably less ambiguity is on security policy, because that has been his workhorse across the race."
