Arsenal's manager has voiced fears that his squad's chase for honors this campaign is being threatened by a concerning circle of fitness setbacks and a relentless schedule.
Key midfielder Declan Rice missed the Champions League clash to Belgium due to illness. In addition, forward Leandro Trossard and center-back William Saliba remain on the sidelines.
There was, however, better news regarding Gabriel Jesus, with the Brazilian striker added to their European squad. He replaces the hurt youngster Max Dowman, who suffered an ankle injury.
"Practice, no because we lack time to train. But clearly the fact that you are without players, you are loading other players more, there's a knock-on effect to that and it's a truly vicious cycle."
Dowman's issue is the most recent in a long list of fitness problems for the North London side. Since the start of last campaign, they have suffered 95 player absences, the second-highest total in the English top flight.
Arteta dismissed the suggestion that practice methods were to culprit, pointing to a shortage of opportunity for drills. He highlighted the strain on available players, some of whom have played over 150 games in two years.
Despite a significant off-season spend exceeding £250 million, Arteta insisted the team is not planning to dip into the January recruitment market.
"Right now we're just concentrating on bringing the players back and hopefully it will be a matter of a short time," he commented. "It's clear how important those coming weeks are going to be."
The squad suffered their initial defeat in 18 games at the hands of Aston Villa, reducing their advantage at the top of the league to two points.
Focus now turns to the Champions League, where a sixth group victory would virtually secure a knockout phase finish. Winger Gabriel Martinelli could create history by finding the net in a fifth straight successive European match.
"The team is frustrated with the result, but we have to keep going," Martinelli said. "It's not like everything is going wrong because we lost one game. So we remain united."
