A trader earned a substantial sum on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader just before it was made public, raising questions about whether someone profited from confidential information of the event.
Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before Donald Trump declared on January 3rd that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.
A single trader, which became a member in December and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, made more than $436K from a initial bet of $32.5K.
It remains unclear. The user had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.
Platform data shows that users put the odds of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the odds had climbed to eleven percent by late Friday night and spiked dramatically in the morning of January 3rd, indicating a rapid movement in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.
"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a bet based on confidential knowledge," said an industry expert.
A handful of other platform users also profited large payouts from similar wagers.
Some lawmakers are growing concerned.
A new rule put forward on recently aims to prohibit federal workers from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to political events.
The industry were examined under the previous administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Insider trading is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are fewer regulations in the event betting arena.
A spokesperson for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
